Netflix Continues to Dominate, Becomes the Top-Grossing App For iPhone

Netflix keeps winning this year. The company's latest victory: having the highest-earning iPhone app in the country.

Netflix is killing it this year. The streaming service's originals won more Emmy Awards than ever before, and the company thanked hits like Narcos and Stranger Things for helping it make way more money than it had in the past.

It followed up those successes with huge announcements about downloads for offline viewing and landing a massive deal with comedian Dave Chappelle for three stand-up specials. And just today, the company announced plans to roll out about 20 new reality series in 2017, and double its slate of original programming overall.

With all that said, it makes sense that Netflix today became the top-grossing app for iPhones in the U.S. according to Sensor Tower, a blog that keeps track of such things. Netflix started making money through its app just over a year ago when it added the in-app subscription option. Sensor Tower says that in that time it has watched Netflix's weekly app revenue go from around $50,000 a year ago to close to $2.9 million a week last month. That's enough for the top spot in the App Store.

Sensor Tower also notes that while Netflix reached the top of the U.S. charts for the first time today, it was already the highest-grossing app in other countries such as India, Mexico, and Colombia.

Netflix's latest earnings report, released in October, says that the company brought in $2.15 billion in the third quarter of 2016. That's a 36 percent jump from the same time period last year.
