Taye Diggs shared a candid update about his 15-year-old son, Walker, during an appearance on Live With Kelly & Mark to promote his role in Broadway’s Moulin Rouge!

Speaking with Kelly Ripa and guest co-host Carson Kressley—filling in for Mark Consuelos—on Thursday, July 31, Diggs explained that while Walker (whom he shares with his ex, Frozen actress Idina Menzel) has talent, he’s more interested in hoops than high notes.

When Ripa asked if his son “has it,” Taye Diggs replied, “Oh, yes, but he doesn’t use it. He’s a basketball player, so he uses it on the court.”

Diggs added that Walker rarely attends shows unless one of his parents is performing. “The only time he goes to the theater is when his mother, Idina Menzel, or I are on stage. Other than that, he can’t stand music theater!” he said.

Kressley asked whether Walker had seen the new production; according to Diggs, “He did, and he said he dug it!”

The conversation also revisited the shared history of Diggs and Menzel on stage. The former couple, who were married from 2003 to 2014, met as part of the original 1996 Broadway cast of Rent, later reprising their roles—Benny for Diggs and Maureen for Menzel—in the 2005 film adaptation.

Menzel went on to earn a Tony nomination for Rent and later won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked. She recently wrapped a Broadway run in Redwood in May and made a cameo in last year’s Wicked film adaptation.

Beyond Moulin Rouge!, Diggs has a Broadway résumé that includes turns in Wicked, Chicago, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The pair also previously stated that tensions from outside fans about their relationship caused their split.
