The expansion of the Tulsa King universe is already taking a sharp turn.
Paramount+ has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Samuel L. Jackson-led spinoff, once known as NOLA King, is being reworked, with the series now retitled Frisco King and relocated from New Orleans to Texas. The project remains in development, but a release date has not been announced.
The update also brings a major creative shift behind the scenes. Taylor Sheridan, the architect of the Tulsa King franchise, will now write all eight episodes of the first season.
The change follows the reported departure of Dave Erickson, who had been expected to serve as showrunner before stepping away due to scheduling conflicts.
Production is scheduled to begin in late March in Fort Worth.
Paramount executives framed the transition as an expansion rather than a reset. “We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of Frisco King and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character,” said Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios, noting that Sheridan’s “singular voice” will shape the series.
Jane Wiseman, head of originals at Paramount+, added that Sheridan continues “to build worlds that attract some of the most iconic talent working today,” calling Jackson’s involvement a reflection of the franchise’s scale.
Instead of completing the job, he revealed a past connection with Dwight and ultimately aligned with him, helping dismantle a rival operation tied to a high-stakes bourbon conflict.
That storyline originally set up NOLA King as a New Orleans-based continuation, with Washington considering a fresh start after the events in Tulsa.
Now, with Frisco King shifting the setting to Texas, the character’s next chapter is being reimagined. The series will still follow Lee as he builds his own operation, but the geographic and creative changes suggest a broader evolution of the franchise’s scope.
