Russell Brand has been released on bail after a London judge approved the request during a short court proceeding connected to rape and sexual assault charges.

The hearing took place on Tuesday, January 20, at Westminster Magistrates' Court, with Brand appearing remotely from the United States via video link.

According to People, the appearance was procedural rather than argumentative. Brand’s participation was limited to confirming basic personal details, and no evidence was debated.

The judge granted bail, allowing the case to continue without detention as it moves toward a plea hearing scheduled for February 17 at Southwark Crown Court.

The current charges relate to alleged incidents involving two women in London in 2009. Prosecutors formally filed those charges in December 2025. They exist alongside a separate set of allegations brought earlier, which significantly broaden the scope of the case.

In April 2025, Brand was charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault tied to accusations from four women. Those claims span a wider time frame, with alleged incidents said to have occurred in England between 1999 and 2005. Brand entered not guilty pleas to those charges in May and has continued to deny any wrongdoing.

Addressing the accusations publicly last year, Brand shared a video message on social media pushing back against the claims. “I’ve never engaged in non consensual activity,” he said, adding that he believed people would be able to judge his sincerity directly.

His legal team has maintained that position as the case has progressed through the British court system.

Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation remains active. Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy previously said the women who came forward are receiving ongoing support from specially trained officers and encouraged anyone with additional information related to the case to contact police.

The legal scrutiny surrounding Brand intensified in September 2023, when several women described alleged experiences as part of a joint investigation by British news organizations, including The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. That reporting prompted renewed attention, eventually leading to the charges now before the courts.
