A courtroom hearing in North Carolina took a violent turn after a father allegedly attacked the man accused of killing his teenage son.

According to People, the incident happened on February 19 inside the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in Charlotte, North Carolina. Authorities say 47-year-old Shaheem Snype was arrested after confronting 21-year-old Marion McKnight during a scheduled court proceeding.

McKnight is facing charges connected to the death of 16-year-old Jamariyae Dixon, along with attempted murder charges tied to the same case. Police say the shooting occurred on May 23, 2025, at Stroud Park Court, where officers found three victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Dixon later died on May 27 at a local hospital.

The February 19 hearing was tied to a motion filed by prosecutors to revoke McKnight’s bond. Court records show McKnight had previously been granted pretrial release in November 2025 after posting a $100,000 secured bond. He was also ordered to remain on electronic monitoring and stay at his mother’s residence.

During the hearing, the situation escalated. Reports state that Snype allegedly punched and kicked McKnight multiple times. McKnight was taken to the hospital following the incident.

Snype was charged with misdemeanor assault, inflicting serious injury. He posted a $1,000 bond and was released the same day, according to arrest records.

Family members say the confrontation came amid ongoing grief. Dixon’s aunt, Susan Sherrill, said, “Any father would’ve did the same thing. We’re still grieving. This is a wound that will never ever close because my nephew was 16 years old, and he should still be here with us.”

McKnight’s attorney, Mike Kabakoff, described the altercation as unprecedented in his experience. “The most violent assault I’ve seen in a courthouse in my 22 years as a lawyer,” he said, adding that while people may understand the grief involved, “the violence we saw in court on Thursday was unacceptable.”

Incidents involving parents confronting or attacking those accused of harming their children have been documented over time.

In 1981, West German mother Marianne Bachmeier brought a handgun into a courtroom and shot Klaus Grabowski, who was on trial for killing her daughter; she was later convicted of manslaughter.

In more recent years, similar courtroom confrontations have been reported globally, including a 2025 case in South Africa where a father threw an object at a suspect during proceedings tied to his child’s death.
