Nearly six years after its debut, Michelle Obama’s documentary Becoming has found fresh momentum on Netflix, climbing back into the platform’s Daily Top 10 in the United States this week.

According to Newsweek, the 2020 film, directed by Nadia Hallgren, quietly re-entered the movie rankings over the weekend at No. 8 before moving up to No. 6 by Monday, February 2.

Produced by Higher Ground Productions, the Obamas’ media company, the 89-minute documentary follows Michelle Obama on her 34-city tour to support her bestselling memoir.

Netflix describes the film simply: “Join former first lady Michelle Obama in an intimate documentary looking at her life, hopes, and connection with others as she tours with ‘Becoming.’” The approach focuses on her personal reflections, family roots, and the people she meets on the road.

When it first premiered on May 6, 2020, the movie had a modest run on the charts, spending less than a week in the Top 10. In the years since, it continued to pull steady interest, logging roughly 1.5 million views between 2023 and 2025, according to Netflix engagement data.

Across TikTok, Threads, and X, users have encouraged others to stream the documentary en masse, pushing hashtags and treating the rewatch like a coordinated digital event.

Posts frame it as a way to spotlight Michelle Obama’s legacy and amplify a story many viewers feel still resonates. That spike in activity appears to have boosted the film’s visibility within Netflix’s algorithm, which heavily favors recent viewing velocity.

The renewed attention also brings fresh eyes to the source material. Obama’s 2018 memoir Becoming remains one of the best-selling books of the decade, with millions of copies sold worldwide and translations in more than two dozen languages.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Melania documentary opened theatrically to underwhelming buzz, and is expected to lose over $70 million at the box office.
