The fallout from Law & Order: Organized Crime ending after five seasons is still rippling through the franchise—and now Mariska Hargitay is giving fans a glimpse of just how emotional it got behind the scenes. The longtime Law & Order: SVU star revealed she “burst out in tears” after watching Christopher Meloni react to the cancellation of his series.

Hargitay said the moment hit her immediately. “I saw it and burst out in tears, first of all,” she said to People, while describing Meloni’s emotional message to fans following the news.

She pointed to the weight of the journey, calling the experience “so beautiful and intimate” and emphasizing how central the show had become to his life.

For Hargitay, the cancellation wasn’t just a programming decision—it marked the end of something deeply shared.

Hargitay and Meloni have been tied together on-screen since 1999, when their characters—Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler—first became the emotional backbone of Law & Order: SVU.

Their dynamic has since evolved into one of television’s most enduring partnerships, fueling decades of fan investment. Among viewers, Bensler or EO shippers—those rooting for Benson and Stabler to finally become a couple—have kept that connection alive long after Meloni initially exited SVU in 2011.

Meloni himself acknowledged that legacy in his own farewell. “I just saw that they announced OC… won’t be coming back,” he said in a video, thanking fans who “helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity.”

Holding back emotion, he added, “Good ride… I had a great time playing him,” crediting the audience for sustaining a character that’s now spanned more than two decades across the franchise.

The cancellation, confirmed April 16, officially ends Law & Order: Organized Crime after a five-season run that began in 2021. The series marked Meloni’s return to the franchise, following Stabler’s move into an NYPD task force targeting long-form criminal operations.

It ran for four seasons on NBC before shifting to Peacock for its fifth and final installment.

Even with the series closing out, the door isn’t fully shut on a potential Bensler reunion. Hargitay hinted that the characters could cross paths again, saying, “Somehow, some way, yes,” while also noting their off-screen bond remains just as strong.
