On October 7, audiences will see Malcolm-Jamal Warner take the screen one last time.
According to PEOPLE, the actor, who passed away in July at age 54, left behind a body of work that spanned comedy, drama, and everything in between. His farewell performance comes in FOX’s crime drama Murder in a Small Town, where he appears in the episode titled "Mother Love."
Warner plays Richard Buscombe, a father caught in a storm of grief and suspicion when his former wife is murdered just after returning to town. Richard’s devotion to his daughter is unwavering, but the pain of the past makes him both sympathetic and suspect. The role, layered with vulnerability and intensity, gives viewers a glimpse of Warner’s talent in full command.
Executive producer Ian Weir recalled how Warner elevated the character beyond what was written. “He brought a depth to Richard that surprised even us,” Weir explained to the outlet. “The performance is grounded in honesty — you can feel both the anger and the love in every scene.”
Production stills show Warner as Richard, his expression etched with worry, the weight of loss and fear pressing on him. For Weir and the cast, the chance to collaborate with Warner was a career highlight. “We were honored he chose to join us,” he said. “His professionalism, kindness, and leadership left a mark on everyone.”
Warner’s family has since spoken publicly about his life, with his mother launching the Malcolm-Jamal Warner Living Legacy account to honor his memory. In her tribute, she described him as “a man deeply in love with his life, his wife, and his daughter,” and someone who never stopped working on his craft.
FOX also reflected on Warner’s passing, noting his many contributions to the network through roles on The Resident and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. Their statement remembered him as an actor with range, but more importantly, as a person whose warmth resonated with colleagues and fans alike.
Season two of Murder in a Small Town, based on the novels by L.R. Wright, begins September 23. Warner’s final episode follows on October 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
