La La Anthony and Kim Kardashian are staying in business with Hulu even after one of their biggest recent projects failed to make it to series.
According to Deadline, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Group Chat, the comedy pilot starring and executive produced by Anthony, with Kardashian attached as an executive producer alongside writer-producer Kenya Barris.
But rather than ending their partnership, the longtime friends are already developing a new half-hour comedy for the streamer with writer-producer Tracy Oliver. Anthony and Kardashian will executive produce the project, and Anthony is expected to take the lead role.
The untitled series centers on a powerful Bay Area crisis manager who works with professional athletes. When her own husband becomes caught up in a scandal, her carefully managed life begins to unravel. The character then leans on the three women who have supported her through every stage of her life as they navigate dating, motherhood, ambition, and the challenge of starting over. The role has been earmarked for Anthony, while the project will be produced through 20th Television, where Kardashian has an overall first-look deal.
The new comedy arrives after Group Chat spent nearly two years in development. The pilot was loosely inspired by Anthony’s 2014 book, The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness, and followed six women in their forties who appeared to have mastered life in Los Angeles.
Anthony starred in the pilot alongside Yaya DaCosta, Melanie Liburd, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Stephanie Suganami.
The move also reflects the off-screen relationship between Anthony and Kardashian, who have been close friends for more than a decade. The two have frequently described their bond as more like a sisterhood than a typical celebrity friendship, supporting one another through business ventures, family milestones, and major life changes.
Oliver, who wrote Girls Trip and created Harlem and First Wives Club, brings a track record of stories built around women balancing friendship, ambition, and reinvention. Her upcoming slate also includes sequels to Girls Trip and The Blackening, as well as new projects for Netflix.
For Kardashian, the deal is the latest step in an increasingly crowded television portfolio. She recently wrapped the Netflix film The Fifth Wheel and is returning for a second season of Hulu’s legal drama All's Fair. Anthony, meanwhile, continues to expand her acting résumé after recent roles in BMF and The Chi.
