The Great American State Fair has hit another hurdle before opening day, this time from the states themselves.
Officials in Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Oregon have said they will not officially send delegations to the event, while Washington remains uncommitted. While organizers continue to move forward with construction and insist every state and territory will ultimately be represented, the latest withdrawals add to a growing list of complications that have followed the fair in recent weeks.
According to state officials, cost was a major factor behind several of the decisions. Oregon cited both expenses and concerns about the event’s direction. In a statement, Oregon spokesperson Luke Harkin said the state would not participate because of “the cost of participating in the Fair” and “growing concerns” about how the event was evolving. North Carolina officials similarly said that limited resources were being directed toward celebrations within the state rather than toward activities in Washington.
Despite the departures, organizers say the Great American State Fair remains on track. Freedom 250, the nonprofit coordinating the event, told CNN that every state's story will still be represented, whether through government participation, tourism agencies, businesses, or cultural organizations.
The group has already released renderings for dozens of planned attractions, including a replica of the Alamo in Texas, a fossil-digging exhibit in Montana, and an interactive mini-golf installation in South Carolina.
The event was originally pitched as a massive showcase of American culture, featuring state pavilions, concerts, exhibits, military demonstrations, movie screenings, and a giant Ferris wheel stretching across portions of the National Mall. But as preparations have accelerated, headlines surrounding the fair have increasingly focused on who is leaving rather than who is attending.
The fair's concert lineup has already undergone a dramatic reshuffling. Morris Day publicly rejected reports that he would perform, while Young MC announced he had withdrawn after learning more about the event.
The Commodores later issued a statement saying they would not appear, and Martina McBride and Bret Michaels also stepped away from scheduled performances.
Not everyone has exited. Organizers continue to unveil pavilion designs and attractions, and artists like Vanilla Ice remain part of the entertainment lineup.
