Gabrielle Union is stepping into the animated sports world with a role that’s less about flash and more about purpose.

The actress voices Jett Fillmore, an elite Roarball star, in Goat, an upcoming family sports comedy from Sony Pictures Animation that follows a small goat chasing a pro career in a league built for bigger, tougher animals.

During an appearance on Today on February 3, Union said the movie’s message was the deciding factor.

“It’s about underdogs learning that you should never let anyone put a ceiling on your dreams,” she explained. “Anyone is capable of doing amazing things with their lives if they’re given the chance and a bit of encouragement.”

The film centers on Will Harris, a teenage goat who earns a surprise shot at the pros in Roarball, a co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest and most physical players in the league.

Instead of open arms, he’s met with doubt — including from Union’s character, a decorated panther and the face of the franchise. That early friction drives the story, forcing Will to prove that skill and heart matter more than size.

The project also carries serious basketball DNA. Stephen Curry serves as both producer and voice actor, and the ensemble includes Caleb McLaughlin, Nick Kroll, David Harbour, Jennifer Hudson, and Union’s husband Dwyane Wade.

Union said she approached the role like a fan first, catching up on projects from her younger co-stars to build chemistry in the booth. But the bigger takeaway, she noted, is the lesson behind the laughs.

She pointed out that people often project their own limits onto others, and that kind of thinking can shrink dreams before they even start.

“Never take advice from people who haven’t done what you’re trying to do,” she added.

Goat is scheduled to open in theaters on February 13, 2026, the same weekend as the NBA All-Star festivities.
