Daddy Yankee is returning to one of New York City’s biggest cultural stages—but this time, it’s not tied to a concert or album rollout. Organizers of the 2026 National Puerto Rican Day Parade announced on Tuesday, May 19, that the reggaeton pioneer will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal when the annual celebration takes over Fifth Avenue on June 14.
According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, the announcement places Daddy Yankee at the center of one of the country’s largest Latino cultural events, which regularly draws massive crowds throughout Manhattan and millions of viewers on television.
Parade officials also confirmed that actor Anthony Ramos, known for originating roles in Hamilton, will be among the event’s featured honorees. Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and jazz trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda are also set to receive lifetime achievement recognition during the festivities.
Past Grand Marshals and honorees have included stars like Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony.
For Daddy Yankee, the honor arrives during a major personal transition. The artist formerly known as Ramón Ayala has spent the past year reshaping both his public image and music career after stepping away from traditional reggaeton performances.
Now performing under the shortened name DY, he has leaned heavily into gospel-inspired music and faith-centered messaging following his retirement announcement in late 2023.
In a recent interview with ABC News correspondent Rocsi Diaz, he described the shift as part of a broader spiritual reset. “Live the present,” he said. “And always depend on your best friend, which is Jesus.”
He also acknowledged that not every fan has embraced the change immediately. “They told me, ‘I miss the old one,’” he said during the interview. “But you’re gonna love the new one.”
Founded in 1958, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade has evolved into one of New York City’s signature annual events, celebrating Puerto Rican identity, music, politics, and culture along Fifth Avenue.
