Chadwick Boseman is back in the headlines following an emotional interview with his widow, Simone Ledward-Boseman, who broke down while reflecting on a pivotal moment in his life that fans never saw.

Appearing on the Today show on March 20, she revealed that the 2018 release of Black Panther coincided with a deeply personal victory: Boseman was in remission from cancer at the time.

Speaking with Craig Melvin, Simone described the period as both joyful and difficult to revisit. “It was a beautiful year,” she said, wiping away tears. “It’s harder to talk about the good times than it is the bad.”

She explained that while the world was celebrating the film’s cultural impact, she and Boseman were quietly marking another milestone behind the scenes.

The timing adds new context to one of the most significant moments in modern film. Black Panther didn’t just dominate the box office—it became a global event, with audiences embracing Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa in a way that extended far beyond theaters. At the time, however, few knew that the actor had been privately battling colon cancer since 2016.

Simone recalled how the film’s success overlapped with a personal sense of relief. “Panther came out in February, to see how deeply, deeply and globally impactful that film was, I just don’t have any words for it,” she said. “He was just so deserving of all the success.”

She added that the celebrations carried a deeper meaning for them: “It did feel like, you know, they didn’t know we were celebrating that he had a clear scan, but we were celebrating that too. It felt like we got another chance.”

Boseman chose to keep his diagnosis private throughout his career, continuing to work on major projects while undergoing treatment. Simone said that the decision reflected his mindset.

“What’s more important about Chad is the way that he lived,” she explained. “The fact that he wouldn’t let cancer get in the way of what he was here to do, let that be the lesson.”

His cancer returned in 2019, and Boseman died on Aug. 28, 2020, at age 43. In the years since, his legacy has continued to be recognized, including a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

That legacy was further cemented in November 2025, when Boseman was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony brought together collaborators like Ryan Coogler and Viola Davis, while Simone accepted the honor on his behalf.
