Bill Bellamy is pulling back the curtain on a near-romance that could’ve been straight out of a ’90s pop culture fairytale—him and Janet Jackson—and why it never actually happened.
During a recent interview with The Art of Dialogue, the former MTV VJ admitted there was a real opportunity there, but he chose not to act on it. “I think I fumbled the Janet Jackson situation because of the friendship,” Bellamy said. “I never wanted to cross the line… because I felt like she was actually really a good friend of mine.”
Bellamy described being on set with her during the janet. era, including appearances tied to “That’s the Way Love Goes,” where her effortless, stripped-down look became instantly iconic.
“That was peak Janet,” he said. “Effortless beauty… low-cut jeans, abs, just natural. I was like, ‘Yo, this is crazy.’”
Bellamy’s proximity to Jackson was during a dominant run that included massive tours and highly produced visuals. He recalled being surrounded by the scale of her operation—“lighting, pyros, dancers, everything”—and realizing in real time what it meant to be a global superstar.
“I was like, ‘When I make it big, this is how it’s supposed to look,’” he said.
Still, the real tension wasn’t about access—it was about chemistry. Bellamy has been consistent over the years that the connection between them was genuine.
In a 2021 interview with People, he put it plainly: “There was an attraction, I’ll be honest with you… there was something going on.”
He added that Jackson wasn’t overt about it, but her interest came through in subtle ways. “She was shy about it but showed in her flirty ways that she dug me more than just a little.”
That flirtation carried over into their on-camera moments and behind-the-scenes interactions. “She used to flirt with me all the time,” Bellamy said, laughing about how his friends pushed him to make a move. “They was like, ‘Yo, B… it’s right there.’”
But he stayed disciplined. “I was like, ‘Nah, man. I don’t want to mess up my job.’”
Instead, the two circled the possibility without ever acting on it. “We never dated,” he said previously. “We were like cats that just purred around each other.”
