Zoë Kravitz has reflected on leaving her mother Lisa Bonet to live with her father Lenny Kravitz after they split up.

In an interview with Esquire, Kravitz, 35, opened up about her childhood and the decision she made to live with her father over her mother when they divorced. "I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn’t even there," she said. "I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she was doing for me. She was so focused on preserving my innocence. My creativity. Because she knew what the world is—that you don’t get that back."

Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet married in 1987 and welcomed their daughter the following year. The couple divorced in 1993 when Zoë Kravitz was just 5. She didn't immediately go to live with her father, whose career skyrocketed in the mid-'90s. Instead, she relocated to Miami to live with her father when she was eleven.

Kravitz suggested that her mother placed her house rules on her, while her father was a lot more relaxed. "It wasn’t that my dad didn’t care," said the Blink Twice director. "He just cared about different things." Kravitz added that, eventually, the appeal wore off. "Just like it happens in the movies," she said. "It’s like, ‘Oh, you think this is perfect? You think this is great? Guess what comes with this.’"

Kravitz also spoke about how her father was a lot more trusting than she was. "I can smell it out pretty quickly," she said. "I had to when I was a kid, because he didn’t. He’s really trusting, and it’s sweet, but I can tell exactly what someone wants."

Kravitz's directorial debut, Blink Twice, is set to hit theaters on Friday, August 23. The movie was originally titled Pussy Island, and in an interview last month, she said the title change was because people felt uncomfortable with it.
