In a since-deleted post on Instagram, Tyrese Gibson suggested that he’s lost a lot by prioritizing others, and urged people to put themselves first.
“I want you to make a decision, I want you to take care of yourself,” he said during the stream, a clip of which can be seen below. “I want you to do something uncomfortable, which is put your face mask on first, before trying to help others. I know it’s uncomfortable, because the thought is, if the plane is going down… I gotta make sure everybody is okay. Everybody’s okay, right? I’m fucked up, I have nothing, and I’ve taken care of everybody. Does anybody care to notice?”
Tyrese suggested that there have been people “bleeding [him] dry,” and that he believes “loyalty has an expiration date.” He urged his fans to let go of “dead-weight,” and said that people keep tiring and wiping themselves out because they’re functioning beyond their capacity.
“Every boat has a capacity… Your life has a capacity, and most of us are continuing to function beyond the scope of capacity, and we got nothing left for ourselves,” Tyrese continued. “I’m not saying be selfish in a negative way, I’m saying be selfish in the capacity of putting your face mask on first to make sure you’re okay first. Stop functioning from a place of giving people and giving people, more and more of what you don’t have.”
Tyrese's video comes not long after the singer and actor revealed that he feels “liberated” after his divorce from ex-wife Samantha Gibson was finalized. In a post shared on Instagram last month, he alleged he “endured almost $50 million worth of public scrutiny, PR damage, and reputational attacks" that were "tied to divorce and child support battles the whole world got to witness.”
In an interview on T.D. Jakes' podcast NXT Chapter, Tyrese said that he related to Halle Berry, who recently said that she’s not ready for marriage again anytime soon because of several divorces she went through. Gibson shared that his girlfriend of five years, Zelie Timothy, is often "hinting at marriage," but due to his divorce from Samantha Gibson, he suffered a huge financial blow.
"You don't know what it's like to wake up, get married, have a prenuptial agreement in place, have the prenup get cracked where you end up paying all of her legal fees and my legal fees," Gibson told Jakes. "And now I'm paying all this money to attorneys trying to protect what I have. … And then they try to take everything that belongs to you with them. And it is really a painful process.”
