Tom Holland Says Sony Had a ‘Really, Really Wonderful Idea’ to Transition Spider-Man Out of the MCU

Last year, Sony and Disney had a disagreement over the rights to the Spider-Man films, making the future of Tom Holland's Spidey uncertain. The companies were able to reach an agreement, and Holland is set to reprise his role in a new standalone story and a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. If the whole ordeal didn't work out, however, it would have meant no more Spidey in the MCU, and it turns out Holland wasn't totally against Sony's plan in that scenario.

In an interview with MTV News, Holland explained, "We had a really, really wonderful idea how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU." He continued, "Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident that they were gonna do justice and make a film of the caliber that Spider-Man requires."

While he would have been satisfied with the plans for future Spidey movies outside of the MCU, he's ultimately glad the character is still rubbing elbows with other superheroes. "But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of feel like it’s where he belongs now," he added.

Holland famously contacted Disney CEO Bob Iger directly when Sony parted ways with the MCU, showcasing just how bad of an idea he thought the separation was. "I’m really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home," Holland concluded. "It was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever: I saved Spider-Man."

Recently, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said he hoped the Spider-Man deal with Disney continues for the forseeable future. "I think this was a classic win-win-win. I think it was a win for Sony. I think it was a win for Disney. And I think it was a win for fans and moviegoers," he said.
