Alexander Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy Star in First Trailer for Viking Revenge Thriller ‘The Northman’

Robbert Eggers looks to cement his place as one of our most interesting young filmmakers, this time with his brutal Viking epic 'The Northman.'

Focus Features has shared the first trailer for the Viking revenge thriller The Northman, the next film from The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård as the Viking prince Amleth, the thrilling clip plays like a Viking version of Gladiator, as it tracks our hero on his brutal quest to avenge the death of his father. Co-written by Eggers and Icelandic poet Sjón, the film reunites the auteur with his Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as Willem Dafoe, who delivered an intense performance opposite Robert Pattinson in Eggers’ 2019 film The Lighthouse.

Rounding out the cast are Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Björk, Claes Bang, Murray McArthur, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. Production on the film initially kicked off in March 2020, but it came to a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. It’s currently set to be released on April 22, 2022.

In a recent interview with Collider, Anya Taylor-Joy said that she is “so proud” to be a part of the film. When asked about whether it will feature the same attention to period accurate detail as Eggers’ last two films, she replied, “It’s Robert Eggers! People showed up the first day of set and I was like, ‘You’re going to be cold, you’re never going to be comfortable, but it’s going to be amazing. That’s just the way it is.”
