With the arrival of the latest trailer for the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, there’s been renewed interest in Bubbles, the King of Pop’s beloved chimpanzee.
The latest trailer for Michael, which stars MJ’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the titular role, features a couple of brief glimpses of Bubbles.
Jackson purchased Bubbles in the mid-’80s from a research facility in Austin, Texas, but was forced to rehome him in the 2000s due to his growing aggression. Now aged either 42 or 43, Bubbles was often seen by MJ’s side during the height of his popularity, particularly during the promotion and tour in support of Bad.
But where is Bubbles now? Well, he’s happily living out his days at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida, the same sanctuary he’s been living in since 2005.
Last year, the sanctuary celebrated the 20th anniversary of Bubbles’ arrival at the facility in a post showing him considerably older than when he was last seen by the late King of Pop’s side.
“Today, we’re celebrating 20 years since Bubbles arrived at the Center for Great Apes in 2005—and since we don’t know his exact birthdate, we’re also celebrating his 42nd birthday today!” read a post from the sanctuary, which can be seen below. “Pant hoots of gratitude to Bubbles's Day Sponsors Janalee J. and Ron P.! Thank you for making his anniversary extra special with your gifts. While Bubbles may be our most famous resident, he’s spent the past two decades enjoying the simple joys of being a chimpanzee—climbing, foraging, and spending time with his chimpanzee friends.”
The sanctuary revealed that Bubbles has “truly thrived” since he arrived at the facility in 2005. “At 42, he’s a dignified and gentle presence in his group, known for his calm nature and love of enrichment activities,” the post reads. “A huge thank you to Michael Jackson’s Estate, which has generously continued to support Bubbles’ care over the years. And to all our supporters—you help make it possible for Bubbles and so many others to live the life they deserve.”
