'It' Director Andy Muschietti Thinks There's Enough Mythology for a Third Film

It: Chapter Two arrives in theaters on Sept. 6, but director Andy Muschietti is already thinking about what's next. Considering the way the films mirrored the lengthy Stephen King novel, splitting it into two by focusing on the Loser's Club as children in the first and adults in the second, it remains unlikely that It will become a trilogy. However, Muschietti has implied that the mythology is deep enough for another potential film starring Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

"There is a whole mythology to the book though," he told io9 before delving into mild spoilers for those unfamiliar with the book.

“Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It has been on Earth for millions of years," Muschietti said of the shape-shifting Bill Skarsgård villain. "He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material." Of course, King's 1986 novel delved further into the Pennywise's origins, something which the 1990 miniseries glossed over a little more.

“It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology,” Muschietti added. “It’s very exciting. But, for now, there’s nothing on the table.” While it's far from a confirmation, Muschietti has indicated that there is a chance he could go back to It in the future. He's already revealed that Maturin the Turtle, which is a flying space turtle featured in novel, will appear in Chapter Two, so he's already expressed his interest into getting into the more absurd elements of King's grandiose story.

Thankfully, he glossed over that infamous sewer scene in the first, so maybe he won't go too far into the madness that was '80s King in a possible Chapter Three.
