Godfrey Clarifies Misunderstanding With T.I.’s Comedy Set After Rapper Voiced Displeasure Over Recent Incident

In a new interview, stand-up comic Godfrey clarified the situation with T.I. after the two traded comments over a comedy set, saying it was a misunderstanding.

In an interview on the Breakfast Club, comedian Godfrey clarified his recent situation with T.I. after the two traded comments about a comedy set in Atlanta.

The comic took issue with T.I. taking the stage after him last month to deliver some stand-up, despite Godfrey being billed as the headliner. “As a headliner, no one is supposed to go up after you,” he said on an episode of his podcast In Godfrey We Trust.

In his response, the Atlanta rapper made it clear they weren’t competing. “I’m not your opponent,” Tip said.

Speaking with the Breakfast Club hosts, Godfrey said it was simply a mix-up and they’ve since patched things up. On the night in question, he returned to the green room backstage immediately after a nearly two-hour show to “decompress,” and didn’t see T.I. perform. “On my podcast, they were like, ‘Did you see him?’ I was like, ‘No. … I didn’t know him to do comedy, so I’m not going to watch,’” he said in the clip below (or at the 6:00 mark above). “Not saying he shouldn’t be doing comedy, I’m just a headliner. I just finished! It was for that moment, but I know someone took that excerpt of me saying that and showed it to T.I.’”

Godfrey then dropped into a hilarious impression of T.I., who’s known to reply to drama with low-angle videos he shares on Instagram. “You know when T.I. goes in the woods, and he has that angle,” he laughed. “‘I just want to say something that's on my heart, and I need to expeditiously take care of this situation.' And I was like, 'Aw, shit.' ... It's like when Snoop Dogg is mad, all you see is his nostrils."

After that clip started to circulate, Godfrey heard from his comedian friends, especially those from the South. He explained he was not dissing T.I. for trying his hand at comedy, he just wasn’t interested in seeing a set after finishing his own. “Now if it would’ve happened that T.I. came before I went up…I would’ve watched,” he added.

They were able to sort out their issues with a FaceTime that was set up with the help of Nick Cannon. “We talked it out, we had a really nice conversation,” Godfrey said. “I even apologized. … I said, ‘I’m sorry about that, but I’m not sorry about the way I felt about how we are as comedians, there’s protocol.’” He compared the situation to him jumping onstage to rap after a T.I. show.

Elsewhere in the interview, he spoke about his impression of Steve Harvey and said he got a threat from the Family Feud host.

“He sent me a lil DM, he was like, ‘When I see you I’ma kick your ass.’”
