Final Fantasy is one of the most iconic and longest-running video game series around, and now it's getting a TV adaptation. As Variety reports, Sony Pictures Television has started work on the first live-action show to bear the Final Fantasy name. Square Enix, FF's publisher and developer, will work on the project alongside Sony and production company Hivemind.

There isn't much to go on as far as plot details so far, but it will reportedly tell a story in the world of Eorzea, which was first introduced in Final Fantasy XIV. The press release added that the series will "explore the struggle between magic and technology in a quest to bring peace to a land in conflict." Fan favorite characters from the games are expected to appear alongside brand new faces. Creatures such as the famous chocobos are slated to show up, too.

While the currently untitled endeavor is the first direct adaptation of Final Fantasy, Netflix previously produced a Japanese soap opera with a focus on Final Fantasy XIV in 2017. The series followed a father and son as they rekindled their relationship through the MMORPG, which they would play together just as they did earlier in their lives. It was announced that a theatrical version titled Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light will hit Japanese theaters in the future. The lead actors in the series are not expected to return, as co-lead Ren Osugi passed away in February 2018.

The production company of this new Final Fantasy show also worked on Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, which is expected to to arrive sometime later this year.
