Disney's latest live-action revival hasn't had a great premiere weekend. Deadline reports that Tim Burton's Dumbo has topped the U.S. box office, bringing in an estimated $45.2 million over the weekend plus previews. The earnings fall well short of the $50 million opening Disney was hoping for. Starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva GreenDumbo had a budget of $170 million.

To compare to other revivals, Burton's 2010 film Alice in Wonderland opened to $116 million, while The Jungle Book opened to $103 million in 2016. Beauty and the Beast brought in $174 million during its 2017 opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Harmony Korine's new movie, The Beach Bum, scored the lowest opening ever for a wide release over 1000 theaters. Despite starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, and Zac Efron, the comedy only grossed $1.7 million. The movie was produced on a modest $5 million budget, just like Korine's previous feature, Spring Breakers.

Us, which opened to a very strong $71 million last week on a $20 million production budget, sits at No. 2 in the box office. Jordan Peele's new horror film has brought in an estimated $33 million in its second weekend, marking a 52 percent drop from opening weekend.

Captain Marvel is still going strong, too, bringing in an estimated $20 million at the No. 3 spot. Combined with its foreign earnings, the Avengers: Endgame predecessor is well on its way to grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
