Donald Glover said that his role as Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie got him some cool points with his children, but he has some work to do before they think he’s as cool as Tyler, the Creator.
When Glover and the rest of the cast, including Chris Pratt, were asked by Entertainment Tonight if their performances garnered them “cool points” at home, the actor and musician responded, “Oh yeah, big time.” Pratt conceded that his children are too young to understand what acting is, and Glover added that his children are “always asking” when someone famous comes up to him if they’re his friend.
“How do they know you? Like, is that your friend? And I'm just always like, no, they're not, they just kind of like what I do,” he laughed. “You're cool, but you're not Tyler, the Creator. I'm like, I do this too. They get me. I mean, I want them to. They're very expressive.”
The 42-year-old, who is also a filmmaker and comedian, appears as Yoshi in the Super Mario Galaxy film. In a recent interview with ExtraTV, his co-star Jack Black, who portrays Bowser in the movie, said that Glover “campaigned for the role” of Yoshi. “He told his agent, ‘Call [Illumination CEO] Chris Meledandri. Tell him I really want to be Yoshi, I’d love to be in the new Super Mario Bros,’” Black explained. “Because he loves it, and he loves that universe.”
Last year, Glover performed at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Festival as Childish Gambino and revealed that he was forced to cancel a large number of dates in 2024 after he suffered from a stroke and learned that he had a hole in his heart.
“I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, 'You had a stroke.' And the first thing I thought was like, 'Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx,’” he told the festival crowd. “They say everyone has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one. You should be living your life how you want. If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
