David Blaine Downplays Leonardo DiCaprio's 'Pussy Posse' Label: 'It Was a Tabloid Thing'

David Blaine has downplayed the reputation of Leonardo DiCaprio's Pussy Posse label, a group of friends he was associated with alongside Lukas Haas, Tobey Maguire, and Kevin Connolly.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blaine talked about his relationship with DiCaprio, whom he met while performing in New York in the '90s. "I was very lucky as a kid to meet some of the people that I thought were so talented and amazing," said Blaine. "We became friends. Leo had also done magic a little bit, and his dad was an incredible artist, and he had these great little bits of knowledge about magicians. He knew Ricky Jay."

He recalled that they recorded a voiceover for Blaine's TV special, Street Magic, while DiCaprio was shooting Titanic. In fact, they were given a studio under the gigantic set to record an interview for it by director James Cameron. When asked about the "Pussy Posse," —a label that stuck to DiCaprio and his close circle of friends in the '90s—he downplayed the reputation.

"That was a narrative," said Blaine, who dismissed the notion that Leo and his young actor friends were a group of womanizers notorious for their partying. "It was a tabloid thing. Because I’d never even heard that term until years later.” He didn't say anything else about the label, which circled Leo and the rest of the crew throughout the '90s as they were thrust into stardom.

The term even followed them when they made their independent drama film Don's Plum, which they ultimately blocked from release because of how misogynistic it was. Even if none of the alleged members of the posse want to talk about their reputation these days, it'll always remain a curiosity for anyone who followed their antics in the '90s.
