Conleth Hill Denies Emilia Clarke's Accusation It Was His Coffee Cup in 'Game of Thrones'

When the final season of Game of Thrones arrived earlier this year, fans were quick to point out a rogue cup of coffee in one shot. The accidental inclusion inspired many memes before HBO later digitally removed it from the episode. After months of accusations flying around as to who the cup belonged to, Emilia Clarkerevealed that it was Conleth "Varys" Hill who caused the gaffe. However, Hill has denied her claim in an interview with Channel 4.

"You know, there’s no proof that I did it. So accuse away. I would need to have had Mr. Man arms to leave a coffee cup there," he explained. "I took a bullet for Emilia Clarke and she touted me. [...] I'm just not making any comments until I have a lawyer."

He clarified that it "definitely wasn't product placement." Following the premiere of the episode, many were quick to place the blame on Clarke, including her co-star Sophie Turner. When the cast joked about it at Comic-Con earlier this year, Hill stayed quiet.

Speaking about it on Jimmy Fallon, Clarke said, "It was his! It was Conleth's coffee cup! He said so.... He said, 'I think it was, I am sorry, darling. I didn't want to say anything because it seemed the heat was very much on you.'"

When showrunner David Benioff finally opened up about the coffee cup in September, he explained how they missed it and said that it's funny in retrospect.

"We were concentrating so much on Daenerys and Jon Snow that we just didn’t see this coffee cup right in the middle," Benioff said. "So at first I couldn’t believe it, and then it was an embarrassment because, ‘How did we not see this coffee cup in the middle of the shot?’ And then eventually it was just funny. This one is just a mistake, and it’s kind of funny to us now."
