The teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated The Batman spinoff series The Penguin starring Colin Farrell has arrived, and the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max has plenty of other heavy-hitters on the way, too.
Set in the aftermath of Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, the series sees the return of Farrell as mob boss Oswald Cobblepot as he attempts to overtake Gotham’s underworld. The teaser showcases footage from the series alongside brief behind-the-scenes looks at the production. It also maintains the brooding, dark look of the Robert Pattinson-starring movie.
The Penguin also stars Cristin Milioti as Carmine Falcone’s daughter Sofia Falcone, Michael Zegen as Carmine’s son Alberto Falcone, and Clancy Brown as former top gangster Salvatore Maroni. The supporting cast is rounded out by Michael Kelly, Rhenzy Feliz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Holmes.
The teaser was revealed as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation of upcoming content on Wednesday, which came with the arrival of more trailers. Chief among them is True Detective: Night Country, the fourth season of the HBO anthology series arriving later this year. Creator Nic Pizzolatto is back for the new season, which relocates the mystery to Alaska after eight men working at a research station vanish without a trace. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis headline Night Country, while Issa López directed all of the episodes.
Also on the way next year is the limited HBO satire series The Regime, which stars Kate Winslet in the story of “one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel.” Also starring are Hugh Grant, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Guillaume Gallienne, among others. The Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs-directed series is written by Will Tracy, who most recently co-wrote The Menu and episodes of Succession.
Finally, there’s the trailer for The Sympathizer, which is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. Starring Hoa Xuande as a spy for Noth Vietnam, and Robert Downey Jr. in several roles, the show is helmed by Oldboy and Decision to Leave director-writer Park Chan-wook. The acclaimed filmmaker serves as co-showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director of several episodes. Also featured in the trailer is Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, and Sandra Oh.
As reported by Variety, the company plans to change the name of its streaming service from HBO Max to just Max. The rebranded service will be available starting May 23, but The Penguin won’t be hitting Max until sometime in 2024. The Batman, Part II, meanwhile, is scheduled to land in theaters on Oct. 3, 2025.
