In an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Chris Pratt said he sent a picture of himself as Batman to James Gunn and the filmmaker just laughed at him.
Pratt is close friends with Gunn, who directed him in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. With that trilogy now seemingly concluded, and Gunn hard at work as the head of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios division, Pratt was asked if he’s been able to figure out what his potential contribution to the DC Universe could be.
“Is there a character you have in mind, that he has in mind, that you’re kind of zeroing in on?” Horowitz asked Pratt.
“No,” he replied. “I always try to lead with mystery, because I think it would be amazing to be able to do it, but if I’m being honest, no, I don’t think so.”
Gunn kicked off DCU with Superman last year, which brought in a respectable $616 million at the box office worldwide and garnered mostly positive reviews. While Pratt has yet to secure a role in the DCU yet, he doesn’t have anyone in particular in mind.
“I think there’s some that I think I could play,” he continued, “and he probably feels the same way, but there’s nothing. I’d like to be mysterious and lead people on a little bit. But, in all honesty, I don’t know what that character would be.”
Despite this, he’s keen to work with Gunn again after wrapping up the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
“I sent a picture of myself with a Batman mask on to James,” Pratt laughed. “It was actually… I did it in Photoshop. And he just said, ‘Haha.’ So, I think it’s safe to say that I’m not going to be Batman. I don’t know how to do it anyway. There’s been so many Batmans! Like, what do you do? … It was never an option, and also, I don’t think I would be right for that. … That’s really tough.”
In the same interview, Pratt spoke about the future of his Guardians character Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and remained tight-lipped on whether he’ll appear in Avengers: Doomsday or its follow-up, Secret Wars.
“They kind of take things one step at a time at Marvel, I’m happy to do anything they want me to do,” he said after dodging a question about whether he’s had discussions about the character’s future. “Also, I personally have a really strong vision of what I would want him to do, and I think it’s fucking great.”
Horowitz asked if he’s “made his pitch” to Marvel, and Pratt seemingly confirmed as such.
“Yep,” he replied. “And I think that I’m down to contribute any way I can to them setting up the next ten years of storytelling.”
