'Bird Box' Special Effects Designer Gives a Look at Film's Unseen Monsters

Netflix'sSandra Bullock-starring horror film Bird Box has been a massive hit for the streaming giant. It has already inspired countless memes and has become their most successful original movie to date. Besides the blindfolds, one detail that stands out from the Susanne Bier-directed film is how it refuses to show any of the monsters wrecking havoc in its world.

Upon premiering on the streaming service in December 2018, fans quickly began speculating about how the monsters in the film looked. The unseen supernatural creatures cause people who see them to commit suicide. Their presence's effect is heightened by never revealing what these monsters look like. Bird Box's special effects makeup designer Andy Bergholtz sort of changed that by giving fans a peek at an early design.

On his Instagram, Bergholtz shared images of some makeup for the monsters that appeared in a cut scene. "Keep in mind, the fatal 'vision' that each character saw would most likely be different for each person," he explained. "You'll understand if you've seen the film. [...] Considering her pregnant state and emotional arc thru the movie, the producers felt Sandra's nightmare would have something to do with a twisted, demonic baby creature attacking her."
