Mexican filmmaker Jonás Cuarón has signed on as director for the Marvel/Sony Pictures offering El Muerto, which will star Bad Bunny in the lead role.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, Cuarón will be working with a script by Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet Alcocer. The story will follow a wrestler with superpowers passed down to him from previous generations of his family. The project is in the early development stages, and will be the first live-action Marvel movie headed by a Latino character.

Originally a character from the Spider-Man universe, El Muerto is an antihero son of a luchador. El Muerto isn’t Bad Bunny’s debut acting role, but it will be his first starring spot. He had a cameo in the latest Fast and Furious installment and played a supporting character in this year’s Brad Pitt action-comedy Bullet Train.

“It’s amazing, it’s incredible,” said Bad Bunny when it was announced he’ll be in El Muerto earlier this year, per Deadline. “I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling, and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion, so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me, and it will be epic.”

Sony is aiming to get the film in theaters on Jan. 12, 2024. It’ll be the second major project from Jonás Cuarón, who made his directorial debut with 2015’s immigration-focused thriller Desierto. He also co-wrote 2013’s Gravity with his father Alfonso, the four-time Oscar-winner behind the classics Children of Men, Y tu mamá tambíen, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The now-60-year-old’s autobiographically-inspired 2018 Netflix flick Roma got 10 Academy Award noms, winning three, including Best Director and Best Cinematography for Cuarón. The father and son’s Gravity collab netted a stunning seven Oscars and 10 noms.

El Muerto is set to be the fifth entry in Sony’s Spider-Man cinematic universe, following two Venom movies, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The studio also has plans for Venom 3 and Madame Web, which will star Dakota Johnson.
