The Eiffel Tower Is Closed Indefinitely After Paris Attacks

The iconic Eiffel Tower has been closed indefinitely, according to the news agencyAgence France-Presse. The major international tourist attraction and beloved landmark is the very heart of the French capital.

In wake of the Paris attacks on Friday night that left over 120 people dead and 300 injured, many have shared the French illustrator Jean Jullien's drawing of a peace sign with the tower in the middle. The viral image has become a symbol of solidarity.

The Eiffel Tower's lights were turned off on Saturday night. According to the Washington Post hundreds of tourists traveled to the tower on Sunday. Many soldiers were heavily armed and patrolling the area.

"The Eiffel Tower is currently closed until further notice," reads a banner on the tower's website. "At the request of the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, the Eiffel Tower will remain in the dark throughout the coming night in sign of mourning."
