People Are Upset That Disney Is Planning to Remake Favorites Like 'Home Alone'

The company announced more remakes to flesh out its upcoming streaming service.

Disney announced that it plans to remake several movies that it owns in the Fox catalog and fans are not happy. Twitter reacted negatively to the news of a slate of remakes that includes Home Alone, Night At The Museum, Cheaper By The Dozen and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

The news of the Cheaper By The Dozen and Diary of a Wimpy Kid remakes elevates the companies penchant for recent reboots into a sort of self-parody. Neither of these movies are more than 16 years old, with the first Diary movie coming arriving this decade. Cheaper By The Dozen is itself a remake of a 1950 film. Predictably, the majority of fan ire was directed at the idea of a Home Alone remake, as the movie has become a major Christmas classic since its initial release.

The plot of Home Alone (much like Seinfeld) is going to face a few hurdles in 2019. Many of the movie's central plot points could easily be solved in the era of smartphones.

Fans had their own ideas about what the remakes might be.

Macaulay Culkin even poked fun at the idea with a snapshot of his current life.

The slate of remakes was part of a larger announcement that Disney's much-touted streaming service would come as part of a bundle with Hulu and ESPN+ for $12.99 per month. The reimagined properties are of a piece with Disney's recent reboot campaign on films like The Lion King and Dumbo, and will slide in alongside Disney's planned new content like Star Wars series The Mandalorian and a Sandlot follow-up.
