Whoopi Goldberg Jokes About Her Failed Marriages: 'I Couldn't Get It Right'

The 'Sister Act' star's marriages to Alvin Martin, David Claessen, and Lyle Trachtenberg all ended in divorce.

Whoopi Goldberg clearly has a sense of humor about her failed marriages.

On a recent episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg and co-hosts discussed public relationships, sparked by WWE star Nikki Garcia’s divorce comments. Rachel Lindsay, who is also going through a divorce, spoke about the pressure to maintain a perfect image despite struggles.

Goldberg, 69, shared her own experience, saying, “I've been married 100 times, and I could never get it right. You got it right for four years. Good.”

“Some people don't get it right the first or second or even the third time. It's not for everybody,” Goldberg added. “So before you kick your own butt, remember marriage is not a monolith and you never know. And you might have seen signs and you thought, ‘Well, okay, we'll get used to each other to be all right’ … All you can fix is you.”

The topic was in response to recent comments Garcia made about her divorce from former Dancing with the Stars pro dancer, Artem Chigvintsev.

Lindsay, who is currently going through her own divorce from former Bachelorette contestant Bryan Abasolo after four years of marriage, opened up about the matter and the public pressure she experienced.

“You feel the public pressure to always let people know that everything's great, even though behind closed doors that might not be the case, or that you're working on it or that you're having a bad day or whatever it may be. A lot of that is wrapped up in shame. You don't wanna say that it failed. You're scared for people to see you in a different way," she said.

The Sister Act star’s three marriages each ended in divorce. Per People, Goldberg’s marriage to her first husband, Alvin Martin, ended in 1979. She and Martin share a 49-year-old daughter, Alexandrea.

Goldberg then married cinematographer David Claessen in 1986 before splitting two years later. Her last marriage was to Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994 before calling it quits following year.

Although Whoopi has said throughout the years that marriage isn’t her thing, she admitted on an episode of The View last month that she likes being “eaten from time to time.”
