Michelle Wolf Hosting White House Correspondents' Dinner Is a Wonderful Trump-Deterrent

Prepare for a Trump roast with a "feminist edge."

President Donald Trump more than likely won’t be attending this year’s annual White House Correspondent Dinner, but who needs him? We’ve got April Ryan, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (maybe), and the night’s newly announced host, comedian Michelle Wolf, recently the recipient of an upcoming Netflix talk show.

Don’t get me wrong, Hasan Minhaj did a great job in 2017, but it’s exciting that the dinner will be presided over by the first woman since SNL’s Cecily Strong hosted in 2015. Wolf, a Daily Show writer and correspondent like Minhaj, will be the fifth woman ever to host the dinner for the association of journalists, according to Deadline. Minhaj was preceded by yet another Daily Show dude, the alum Larry Wilmore. We all remember that year.

“I’m delighted to announce ‘Nice Lady’ Michelle Wolf as our featured entertainer this year,” Margaret Talev, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association said in a statement shared Thursday. “Our dinner honors the First Amendment and strong, independent journalism. Her embrace of these values and her truth-to-power style make her a great friend to the WHCA. Her Pennsylvania roots, stints on Wall Street and in science and self-made, feminist edge make her the right voice now.”

Wolf is a frequent, brutal critic of the Donald, so the evening could more accurately reflect a Comedy Central Roast session rather than a nerdy journalist prom. Here’s a taste of her humor below from a segment on The Daily Show last fall. As Talev pointed out in her press release, Wolf's got a hilarious, “feminist edge.”

Wolf landed her Netflix show earlier this month, which is expected to be a departure from her typical Daily Show routine. “You can expect the types of jokes my former bosses would tell me we couldn’t do on TV,” Wolf told Deadline.

The WHCD is set to take place on April 28.
