Since its theatrical release this month, Superman has proven to be a hit among fans. But it’s also been a full-circle moment for some other viewers.
In a conversation with Variety published on Monday, July 21, Brandon Routh — who played Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns — revealed that he loved the most recent iteration of the story, which stars David Corenswet as the namesake hero.
“It was a lot of fun,” Routh said of the movie. “I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.”
Though Superman Returns was panned at the time of its original release, Routh was a good sport about the latest reimagining of Superman, and praised Corenswet for embodying all of the nuances of both Superman and Clark Kent.
“I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective,” Routh said. “I really got into it as I’m watching him navigate those tricky Superman moments in the first conversation with Lois and Clark in the apartment. And then all of the family stuff for me really hit. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot in there. I have to go see it again.”
Routh is starring in an upcoming movie called Ick, in which he plays a teacher named Hank who reconnects with a past love, Staci (Mena Suvari), as an alien named the Ick is invading the town. The actor noted that there are many layers to the Ick, and that he looks forward to hearing how fans unpack the film.
I think [the Ick] can be the things we’re afraid to look at and address because we think they’re going to be icky. But the thing is, it just builds up. It just builds up and up and up and becomes a mask that you can’t control anymore because it’s taken over more of you.”
Ick arrives to theaters on Thursday, July 24.
