'Girls Trip' Makes History by Hitting $100 Million Box Office Mark

It's the first time a film written, produced, directed, and starring black people has reached the milestone.

Girls Trip is doing major numbers and making history in the process. The film, which was released on July 21, has so far made a whopping $100 million at the box office, making it the first comedy of the year to reach the milestone. In doing so, it set another record as well. Girls Trip is the only film to have made $100 million at the box office that was written, produced, directed and starring black people. The movie has been received well by viewers and critics alike. As of this writing, it has a solid 88% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, which was directed by Malcolm D. Lee and written by Tracy Oliver and Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, Larenz Tate, and Mike Colter​. It has been doing well internationally and is still set to premeire in still more markets—it'll be out in Australia and Romania on August 31. Girls Trip has grossed over $7 million in the UK and has been siting at the top of the box office for two straight weekends in South Africa.
