Wonder Woman continues making history at the box office. The film is straight up running laps around Man of Steel, its Superman counterpart.
Wonder Woman has already passed the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Patty Jenkins and her film will likely soon pass Mamma Mia!, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, to become the highest-grossing live-action film directed by a woman, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Mamma Mia!, which came out in 2008 (making the feat even more impressive, considering the economic state of the U.S. at that time), grossed $609.8 million. This comparison does not account for inflation.
Wonder Woman might not stop there, though. It could also surpass Kung Fu Panda 2 ($665.7 million) and become the highest-grossing film ever to be directed solely by a woman. How about that?
In Man of Steel’s full time in the theatres, it grossed $291 million in the U.S. That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at, but Wonder Woman has already brought in $289.2 million, and less than a month into its run it’s already well on its way to surpassing Man of Steel.
