Tyler, the Creator has never been shy about voicing his thoughts on the rap landscape. These days he’s got a bone to pick with new rappers who don’t love making music.
In a new clip from Maverick Carter’s show Mavericks (the full episode releases tomorrow), Tyler discusses his frustration with the new crop of artists. He begins by giving a disclaimer for his comments: "I don’t want to seem like a hater," Tyler said. "Sometimes I have hater energy because I think I’m that good."
Tyler goes on to express his deep love for the art form before criticizing new rappers that are only in the industry for a bag.
"It’s so many n****s out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians because they make meme records," he said. "They’ll publicly be like 'I don’t give a fuck about music I just do this shit for money.'"
While Tyler doesn’t condemn this mindset entirely, he explains how it negatively affects artists who truly care about the craft. "When every publication is like, 'Hell yeah, let’s put that out,' now you’re taking up space for n****s like me," he lamented.
Tyler’s passion for rap also flared up in 2023 when he appeared on the Rap Radar podcast, where he criticized the performative nature of top 5 rapper lists.
"It’s performative, and again some people might be right, but you got YoungBoy’s and Baby’s out here and that’s your favorite album? I don’t care about people’s objective top nothing, tell me what is your favorite," he said. "Because you learn so much from people and get context."
He continued, "I wanna know why you think Pookie Dookie’s second album is your favorite."
In other Tyler news, the rapper is the face of Supreme’s latest campaign, with posters featuring him in a Supreme Box Logo tee appearing around London.
