Rapper Rob Base, of the classic track “It Takes Two,” has died at 59 years old.
Base, one half of the legendary hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, passed away on May 22 after being diagnosed with cancer. He just turned 59 four days ago.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” a statement posted to his page reads. “Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.”
Born in 1967, Base, born Robert Ginyard, met E-Z Rock when they were children in Harlem, New York. They formed the duo as teenagers and quickly found success with songs like “DJ Interview” and “Make It Hot” that amassed local buzz. They created the demo of “It Takes Two” in about two days, which resuled in the pair getting a record deal.
After signing, they released their debut album of the same name in 1988, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. The following year, Base released his solo studio album The Incredible Base.
With E-Z Rock, Base was known for being an instrumental figure in blending hip-hop with house. “It Takes Two” remains an important cultural touchstone in both genres; the track has been sampled by a wide number of artists including Snoop Dogg and Black Eyed Peas.
E-Z Rock passed away from diabetes complications in 2014.
Prior to Base’s death, the rapper had been performing on the “I Love the 90’s Tour” alongside musicians such as Vanilla Ice, Young MC, and All-4-One.
