The full story of how Ol’ Dirty Bastard rescued a 4-year-old child after she was struck by a car in 1998 has finally been revealed.
In an exclusive clip from the Ol’ Dirty Bastard: A Tale of Two Dirtys documentary obtained by People, Maati Lovell — the woman who was four years old at the time that ODB saved her — and her mother, Maxine, give a full explanation of the moment that Maati was struck by a vehicle in Brooklyn.
"Maati was nowhere,” said Maxine. “I couldn't find her. And I kept saying, 'Where's my daughter? Where's my daughter? Where's my daughter?' And everybody said, 'Under the car.' When I bent down all I saw was her. And she wasn't crying; she wasn't screaming. "But when she saw me, then she screamed."
The pair then explained that the Wu-Tang rapper was one of a dozen people that came immediately to help Maati. "Some brothers came from out of nowhere," said Maxine. "They lifted the car. Someone slid [Maati] from underneath. She didn't cry and she didn't scream. She didn't know what had happened to her. But when she saw my face, she started wailing."
After helping Maati to get free, and Maati getting to the hospital to get treated for her injuries, Maxine explained that ODB kept in touch to make sure her daughter was fine.
"He kept checking [on us] — he didn't just leave it like that," said Maxine. "And I told him, 'Anytime you need to talk, call me.' So he would call me and tell me things that were in his head.”
“And he was glad that he was there [when Maati needed assistance],” Maxine continued. “I think he was trying to prove that he was a good guy, and I said, 'I agree with that. You definitely helped my child.'
Ol’ Dirty Bastard spoke about the incident back in 1998 on The Howard Stern Show, saying, “All I can do is thank God.”
“I just stopped my car in the middle of the street and then ran towards the car,” he continued. “It was like a spontaneous reaction.”
