Mario thinks that Tory Lanez is a good person, two years the singer he wrote a letter to the judge in Lanez's shooting case.
In an interview with The Shade Room, Mario briefly addressed his support of Tory Lanez, as well as comments about Black men needing to "control our ego, anger etc." that he made in the immediate aftermath of Lanez shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
“When it comes to the internet, I can be very impulsive,” he said around the hour-and-eleven-minute mark in the video below.
“That was early on,” he added about the timing of his initial comments. “I also wrote a letter for [Tory] because he’s a good person, and I know he’s a good person. But I wasn’t there and I don’t know all the details.”
Mario then suggested that he doesn’t fully believe that Tory shot Megan Thee Stallion, despite the Canadian rapper's conviction in 2022.
“Do I think it’s completely true? No,” said Mario, before adding an additional explanation for why he wrote to the judge. “I just wanted it to be fair, so that he didn’t get something that he didn’t deserve.”
Back in 2023, Mario wrote one of over 70 letters that the judge in Tory’s trial received in support of the artist, in advance of his sentencing. In his letter, Mario wrote at length about what he thinks of Tory.
“Tory is the type of person who doesn’t look for handouts or cheat codes,” wrote Mario. “He works harder than almost anyone I know in this business. I have watched Tory struggle as an independent artist against a system that tried to process him because of his hard work and drive.”
“His success in that realm says more about his work ethic and character than I ever could,” Mario continued. “Another incredible thing about Tory is that he loves and gives back to his community. He had led many people and helped them out of unfortunate circumstances. He walks the walk.”
Tory was eventually sentenced to serve ten years in prison. Earlier this month, the singer’s felony convictions and prison sentence were affirmed by the California Court of Appeals.
