Madison Beer has opened up about how she felt after nudes of her leaked when she was 15 years old resulting in her losing her manager, label deal and lawyer.
In an interview with CBS ahead of the release of her album locket, Beer reflected on the aftermath of a leaked video that changed her life.
"What harms me about it was how it was handled publicly," she explained. "I think it’s really sad for me to look back and know that I was a minor being absolutely destroyed on social media, trending on Twitter, and this video is circulating everywhere. I’m just being shamed, like I was some horrible, disgusting person."
After detailing how she faces constant paranoia due to what happened, Beer reflected on her feelings about losing her lawyer, label deal, and manager all within 48 hours of each other.
"When you feel like you, kind of, get buried six feet under by the industry that controls everything, you’re like 'I have no shot,'" she added.
In Beer’s 2023 memoir, The Half of It, Beer addressed the leaks, writing about how she previously contemplated suicide. "It was the beginning of some of the darkest years of my life, starting at age 16 and following me into my twenties," she wrote. "There were many times — just like the night my nudes were leaked — that I felt so backed into a corner I thought the only way out was to end my life."
In an interview with People ahead of the release of The Half of It, Beer expressed her wish for it to inspire people to be nicer.
“I hope by sharing my honest journey that perhaps someone who wanted to hide behind a keyboard to be mean or poke fun at someone else's expense thinks twice before they hit 'send,'" she said. "I hope that we can find the strength to support each other and that we can work to treat others in the way we would want to be treated."
