Though Lil Durk is ready to go to trial for federal murder-for-hire charges in just over a month, there's a chance it could be postponed until 2026 — after it already got pushed back earlier this year.
In a new joint motion filed in federal court on Sept. 12, both the prosecutors and the attorneys for several of the rapper’s co-defendants have agreed on the delay, because the case is “so unusual and so complex” that the defense teams deserve more time to get ready for the trial.
Durk himself isn’t agreeing with the potential delay.
“Defendant Banks does not join in the stipulation to continue the trial in this matter,” reads the motion obtained by Complex.
Whether he consents or not, federal prosecutors believe he should be made to abide by the delay since he’s joined to the others for trial, and that the three-month wait “constitutes a reasonable period of delay.”
If the motion is granted, Durk’s new trial would begin in January.
Last fall, Lil Durk was hit with murder-for-hire and gun charges over the allegation that he ordered Only The Family associates to carry out a hit on rapper Quando Rondo in 2022 in Los Angeles — with the result being the death of Saviay’a Robinson who was with Rondo in a vehicle.
In January, Durk’s trial got pushed back to October because of its “unusual” and “complex” nature. In court documents about the moving court date, the case was revealed to involve “approximately 230 GB of digital evidence such as audio/video recordings and surveillance footage, and approximately 20,000 pages of reports concerning murder and other violent acts, photographs, witness statements, and medical documents.”
Because of this, the case “is so unusual and so complex that it is unreasonable to expect adequate preparation for pretrial proceedings or for the trial itself within the Speedy Trial Act time limits.”
Since the case was initially pushed back, Durk has dealt with his fair share of issues related to it. In May, prosecutors claimed that the rapper threatened witnesses. That same month, he was hit with an additional charge of stalking, resulting in death for the murder-for-hire case.
In June, Durk and his legal team claimed that an FBI informant had been giving false information to the prosecution in hopes of being released from jail.
