The Kanye West documentary In Whose Name? is now available to be streamed after being released theatrically on Sept. 19. Audiences can find it on VOD platforms like Apple, Amazon, Google, YouTube, and Fandango.
The documentary, which was shot over the course of six years and is made from thousands of hours of footage, dives into key moments across several of the rapper’s major career milestones. It also chronicles his mental health struggles and controversies over the years.
Director Nico Ballesteros released a statement about the film and how it was made.
“At just 18, I was barely out of high school when my life changed overnight,” Ballesteros said, per Deadline. “I went from a middle-class upbringing to flying on private jets, shadowing one of the most famous people alive. I had studied documentary filmmaking but didn’t yet have a subject. Ye became that subject. His world gave me both purpose and a space to develop my craft. In Whose Name is the culmination of that journey.”
“I am humbled at the reception this movie has gotten from audiences, critics, and my peers in the filmmaking community” Ballesteros continued. “By extending its reach beyond the theater, the film brings its exploration of American belief, power and identity to a global audience, offering a deeper understanding of America’s conditions while illuminating the life and legacy of one of the most iconic entertainers of our time.”
The streaming release of In Whose Name? comes months after Ballesteros suggested that this cut of the film would “change everything.” In September, the director hopped on X to let everyone know that this version of the film would be different.
“THE TRUTH IS COMING,” he wrote in a since-deleted tweet.”THE CUT FOR STREAMING WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING. WE HAD TO TROJAN HORSE CULTURE WITH THE THEATRICAL RELEASE. TRUST THE PROCESS. I APPRECIATE THE PROCESS AND AM IN SERVICE TO IT.”
The film features several moments that have gone viral since its release, such as Ye getting into an argument with Kris Jenner, and also him dealing with a tense confrontation with Michael Che backstage at 'Saturday Night Live.'
