J. Cole’s story about his wife’s words of wisdom will remind you why it’s so important to be married to someone you consider to be your better half.

During an interview with Apple Music’s Nadeska Alexis at his childhood home at 2014 Forest Hills Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina, J. Cole explained how his wife helped calm him down when he was stressed out before the convo even got started.

“I was running late for this, and I’m stressing because the reason I was running late was because the day got kind of ahead of me,” Cole began (around the 37:38 mark). “I got some shit scheduled that went a little over. I got a flight tonight. I’m thinking about all this stuff.”

“I’m thinking about how late I am, and I’m thinking about how I haven’t done an interview in mad long. I’m fucking kind of nervous about that,” he continued.

Cole then explained how he relayed this information to his wife, along with the fact that he really wanted to meditate before the chat so he could be in a good state of mind for the interview. As he was stressing out about the entire situation, her response to him put everything into perspective.

“What she says is, ‘Yo, you’re already late. It’s cool. Just go do your meditation. You’ll be late 20 more minutes. You don’t want to make it worse going down that stress,’” he recalled.

“I wasn’t even asking her for clarity or an answer,” Cole continued, reflecting. “That’s God speaking through her.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Cole reflected on his younger listening habits as he expressed hesitancy in letting his kids listen to his favorite rap songs.

“I’m very grateful that I grew up in this house with my mom, and eventually my stepfather, who had no regard for what the fuck I heard or watched,” he said. “I had a stepfather that put me on to ‘Pac at six or seven years old. Thank God, but I can’t do that.”

Cole added that he heard “straight gangsta rap” as a kid — and while he values those experiences, he admitted he’s not “comfortable” doing the same thing for his children.

“I don’t know if it’s right or wrong,” Cole said. “I’m not comfortable playing my favorite songs around my kid yet, because the content is sexual, it’s violent.”
