Doechii’s NPR Tiny Desk performance is being hailed as one for the books.

The rapper and her backing band wowed the audience with jazzy renditions of songs from her acclaimed project Alligator Bites Never Heal, including “Boom Bap,” “Denial Is A River,” “Catfish,” and, of course, “Nissan Altima.”

Before closing out her electrifying show, Doechii gave a passionate speech about her final song ”Black Girl Memoir” from Oh the Places You’ll Go.

“I decided to perform this record because I think there’s been a lot of heightened emotions with the current state of our country, and I wrote this song specifically for Black women,” she said. “As a dark-skinned woman, there’s a very unique experience I’m trying to internalize,”

“This is a song I think other dark-skinned women will relate to,” she added. “So this is dedicated to all the beautiful Black women in the room.”

Doechii’s Tiny Desk concert has been adored by critics and fans alike, being cited by some as one of the series’ best installments. It rivals the reception of The LOX’s Tiny Desk concert that premiered in August where the legendary group performing classic songs like “We Gonna Make It,” “Money, Power & Respect,” and “By Your Side.”

NPR giving Doechii her flowers by having her on Tiny Desk came a few months after Kendrick Lamar deemed her as one of the best rappers in the game right now.

K. Dot hopped on Instagram and posted the cover art for Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, captioning the post with “the hardest out.”

Doechii signed to Lamar's former label Top Dawg Entertainment in 2022 as the record label’s first female rapper. For the next two years, she released collaborative tracks with artists like SZA, JT, and Kodak Black before releasing Alligator Bites Never Heal earlier this year.
