Yonkers’ council has voted to rename the intersection of School Street and Brooke Street as "Earl DMX Simmons Way," cementing DMX's bond with the community.
A public hearing on May 27 drew residents and officials together in support of the measure, and the council's subsequent vote went through without a single objection.
The location carries real biographical weight. The renamed intersection sits near the Calcagno Homes on School Street, the public housing complex where the rapper, born Earl Simmons, was raised. City leaders framed the designation as a way to move his connection to Yonkers from informal memory into the official public record.
Another recent honor that DMX received was when he was posthumously ordained as a minister by Foster Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in January.
“Earl Simmons wrestled with God in the public square, turning his pain into a ministry of raw truth,” said Bishop Dr. Osiris Imhotep, founder of the Gospel Cultural Center, in a statement. “This ordination recognizes the divine calling he fulfilled every time he spoke a prayer into a microphone.”
Also in January, 50 Cent announced that he is creating a new podcast called Look Thru My Eyes: Becoming DMX in partnership with Narratively.
“DMX’s story is bigger than the music — it’s about survival, faith, pain, and purpose,” said Fif. “Look Thru My Eyes: Becoming DMX gives people a chance to understand where X came from, before the fame, through the voices of the people who were really there. This is the story that shaped the legend.”
The series will be hosted by Jadakiss and will be available to listen to later this year.
DMX passed away in 2021 at 50 years old. The following month, his first posthumous studio album, Exodus, was released by Def Jam Records.
