A newly announced documentary will give an “unfiltered view without narration” into the life of the artist formerly known as Kanye West.
Titled In Whose Name?, the film, directed by Nico Ballesteros, is set to be presented by film distribution and sales company Utopia at the American Film Market this month. A press release reveals the film is currently in the post-production phase, with additional details set to be made public soon. Also shared on Friday was an extended synopsis, though it’s worded in such a way so as not to get too specific about which key moments, exactly, can be expected to have space in Ballesteros’ production.
“The film follows Ye’s ascent to becoming the richest Black man in American history while uncovering why the superstar risked everything he had built in the name of freedom,” the synopsis states. “Examining the culture that birthed the star, In Whose Name? explores the overlapping influences of corporate exploitation, racial complexities, and psychological struggles inherent in the American dream.”
The doc is uniquely billed as being “shouted in mystery,” with Ballesteros, then 18 and “armed with an iPhone,” being invited to join Ye in l what would become “a six-year journey” back in 2018.

Ballesteros, whose history of work with Ye is extensive and includes the Donda era “Come to Life” visuals, said in an Instagram update commemorating the announcement that the film will be “coming to theaters worldwide” next year. He also shared a screenshot of a text from Ye. It reads, “That doc was very deep. It was like being dead and looking back on my life.”
The Ballesteros-helmed doc follows the 2022 release of Coodie & Chike’s three-part jeen-yuhs documentary. The Netflix-distributed title was met with critical praise and ultimately received an Emmy nomination, losing to The Beatles’ Get Back.
Next for Ye is a new solo album, his first since Donda. Bully is expected soon, though a release date hasn't been announced.
