Tommy Richman is inviting fans to join him in celebrating the restoration of his mother’s hearing with the release of new song “Changes,” out today (May 8).

The track was inspired by Richman having the opportunity to pay for his mother to have surgery that resulted in her hearing being restored, something he previously cited as having shifted his creative direction in a note to fans back in March.

“I owe a lot to these two projects, Alligator and Coyote,” Richman said at the time. “I was originally planning on creating a third and final chapter to the Animal series, but with my mom having life-changing surgery being able to hear again, I’ve decided to change creative direction completely.”

“Changes” opens with thumping drums before the keys and bass roll in. The lyrics find Richman asking his mother to tell him “all the things you hear” and “all the things you fear,” all while urging patience.

“You can’t even hear me / What I even talk for?” he sings. “You know I lost a lot / But I know you lost more.”

In an Instagram update shared ahead of the new track’s release, Richman revealed the exact surgery his mother had, adding that “Changes” is dedicated to her.

“My mother has been deaf for her whole life,” he told fans. “With cochlear implant surgery, she’s able to listen to music for the first time. Here is the first song for you, mama.”

“Changes” is out now. Listen here, then catch the official video below.
