Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of Top Dawg Entertainment, is clearly tired of being tagged in posts about rap’s current presence on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In a series of X posts this week, Punch replied to the discourse, which saw no shortage of fans bringing up Kendrick Lamar amid the discussion. For some time now, as you may have seen, posts have circulated about the current lack of a rap-focused track in the upper levels of the Hot 100. As it stands now, rap is indeed absent from the top 10 of the chart, though tracks including the artist formerly known as Kanye West’s “Father” (featuring Travis Scott and taken from Ye’s Bully album) are seen deeper into the weekly ranking.
“Ppl tagging me talking about the Hot 100,” Punch wrote on X on Wednesday (April 8). “‘NO hIP HOp sOnGS iN THe hOT 100’ lol. So what!”
Punch’s post was met with numerous replies, several of which he responded to, as seen below. As Punch sees it, Kendrick has “been the king of rap for a decade now.” Furthermore, in reaction to someone arguing that he should be focused on landing top 10 entries on the Hot 100, Punch pushed back, arguing instead that his job is to “help my artists reach their goals.”
Elsewhere, Punch responded to additional Kendrick-focused criticism, noting that it’s “his era every time he drops an album” and adding that this status has been in place ever since the 2012 release of good kid, m.A.A.d city. He also lamented the public’s focus on awards and charts.
“Don’t nobody care what y’all n***as think or feel lol,” he wrote in one post.
Amid the rap-centric charts debate, some have zeroed in on Drake’s “What Did I Miss?” track, released last year. The song, which may or may not end up on Drake’s upcoming Iceman album, peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100.
